英文是“Hell is other people”，大意是說他人的存在是自己存在的參照，正是因為有他人的存在，人才會不斷的拷問自己，所以說“他人即地獄”。
這是薩特壹篇短篇小說裏的壹句話。
小說名字是《間隔》，說的是罪惡的人死後會下入地獄，剛來的人都很害怕，猜想會有什麽樣可怕懲罰迎接他們，沒想到所謂的地獄生活只是住在指定的屋子裏罷了，只不過，要和與自己最合不來的人住在壹起。故事就在這樣三個鬼魂間展開了，他們被分配在同壹間鬥室，鬧得十分不愉快。
可是房門打不開，不能拂袖而去；他們又想尋死，死掉壹個就少了壹重矛盾，可自己本身就是鬼魂，不能再死；鬼魂不用排泄不用送飯，於是永遠不會有第四個人進入他們的生活，只有他們三個，面面相覷……
於是三個靈魂恍然大悟：“他人即地獄！”這樣無休止的生活是比上刀山下油鍋更可怕的懲罰，是真正的地獄的生活。
