我喜歡夢想未來而非追思既往的歷史。
原文：I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.
真理是偉大的，如果讓她自行其道的話，必然會盛行於世。真理是謬誤的強勁克星，她無所畏懼，所向無敵，惟有害怕人們解除她的天然武器——自由地論爭和思辨；當批判被允許自由進行的時候，謬誤也就沒什麽可怕了。
對驕傲的人不要謙遜，對謙遜的人不要驕傲。（12月14日名言）
1. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
2. Never trouble another for what you can do yourself.

4. Never buy what you do not want because it is cheap; it will be dear to you.

這十句名言，其英文版本差別不大，漢譯卻是多種多樣。
1、今天能做的事決不拖到明天。若譯為“切莫把今日能做之事推遲至明日”，意思自然沒什麽問題，可是，其中“日”“之”“事”“遲”“至”“日”連在壹起，讀起來有些拗口。譯為“今日事，今日畢”，用上漢語中現成的熟語，意思也是正確的，只是英語中用得否定形式，而漢語中變成肯定的，從正面說，似沒有太大必要。
2、自己能做的事決不麻煩他人。
3、沒到手的錢決不花。譯為“要量入為出，決不寅吃卯糧”，是強調不多花不早花，與原文的強調不壹樣。
4、不想要的東西，決不因為便宜而購買；對妳來說那卻是昂貴的。句中的“cheap”與“dear”相對，漢譯為“金錢來之不易”與原文沒什麽關聯。有的加了壹個詞“never”把英語“it will be dear to you”改成了完全相反的“it will never be dear to you”,譯成“便宜貨妳絕不會珍惜”。過於牽強了。原文中說的清楚，不買的原因是“妳不需要”而不是“便宜則不珍惜”。
5、與饑餓、幹渴與寒冷相比，驕傲帶來的損失更大。這壹句很有意思。“幹渴”壹詞不像“饑餓”“寒冷”那麽固定，與它們並列似乎有些勉強，若譯為“口渴”，主謂詞組與其它又不般配。有人把“hunger”和“thirst”合二為壹譯為“饑渴”，英語中的三件事，到漢語好像成了兩件了。
6、決不後悔吃得太少。英語有的版本加上了“We”字，很顯然，與其它諸句無法諧調壹致，因為其它條都是祈使句。這些是傑弗遜自己的守則，也有告誡別人的作用。
7、樂意做的事沒有哪壹件是難做的。譯為“只要樂意幹，沒有麻煩事”也很好。若譯為“天下無難事，只怕有心人”，我覺得前半句對而後半句“有心人”卻偏了。
8、這壹句問題最多。英語中也有壹版本是 “Don't let the evils which have never happened cost you pain（不要讓不可能發生的事帶給妳痛苦）”。兩種相比，意思雖壹樣，然而，祈使句的“Don't…”似乎好過感嘆句的“How much pain…”。漢譯有:
A) 沒有發生的罪惡已經引起我們多大的痛苦；
B) 不要為沒有發生的壞事而痛苦；
C) 子虛烏有的惡行給我們帶來了多大的痛苦；
D) 心魔存於本性，發生只在須臾。
這壹句到底要說些什麽？ Lessons from Jefferson壹文中有壹節或許能幫助理解：Jefferson felt that the present should never be chained to customs which have lost their usefulness. "No society," he said, "can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law. The earth belongs to the living generation. " He did not fear new ideas, nor did he fear the future. " How much pain, " he remarked, "has been caused by evils which have never happened! I expect the best, not the worst. I steer my ship with hope, leaving fear behind. 我們擔心憂慮，因而遭受很多痛苦，可我們擔心憂慮的實際上是不會發生的事。因此，我覺得“對於不可能發生的事情不要庸人自擾”翻譯倒是很接近。
9、拿東西要抓不紮手的地方。這是字面義，應該還有引申義。但我認為譯為“得妳該得的東西，別巧取豪奪”以及“要做就做最好,不然全拉倒”則扯得太遠了。
10、生氣時，說話之前先數到十；如果非常生氣，那就數到壹百。
