生平簡介
約翰．狄克森．卡生於美國賓夕維尼亞州聯合城。曾為哈維福大學文學雜誌《哈維福人》的主編，當時即已開始發表短篇作品。
之後前往法國巴黎繼續求學，但旋即返國，壹九三○年發表處女作《It Walks by
Night》，創造筆下第壹位名偵探亨利．班克林。兩年後結婚，與妻長期定居英國，後擔任過美國推理作家協會主席，並獲愛倫坡大師獎。
他的筆下有兩名最重要的偵探：基登．費爾博士（形象以其心中偶像卻斯特頓為藍本）與亨利．梅利維爾爵士（以另壹筆名卡特．狄克森發表），傑作各包括《三具棺材》、《綠色膠囊問題》，《獨角獸殺人事件》、《猶大之窗》等。後期則開始創作歷史推理，卻結合了時空穿梭的幻想性設定，撰寫現代偵探回到過去，解決發生在那時的謎案。
其作品屬於古典推理範疇，提供公平線索，但在風格上與範．達因完全不同，他專寫「不可能犯罪」，長於營造恐怖感，常使全篇故事充滿超自然、魔法與巫術的氣氛，創造了為數眾多、型態相異、制造方法法各各不同的密室與準密室（於是被人尊為「密室大師」），而在解謎技巧上則傾向心理證據的挖掘，並非單純地將物理線索作排列組合。
