廣州的英語標識混亂，為人詬病已久。廣州市質監局介紹，廣東省目前尚未有全省統壹的公***場所標誌英文譯法。目前不少公***場所雙語標識的譯法存在問題，有些英文譯法與中文原意相去甚遠。“中式英語標牌”、簡單語法的錯誤，會讓國際遊客感到困惑，損害廣東現代、開放的國際形象。
有關人士介紹，廣州大部分的英語標識主要存在兩個問題：壹是英語用詞不合適，前後不壹致；二是很多英語標識仍然用的是“漢字打造法”，白雲國際機場此前就被媒體曝光出英文標識的問題，如這邊的“停車樓”被翻譯為“parkinggarage”，而就在相隔不到20米的另壹指示牌上，同樣是“停車樓”，卻被翻譯為“carparkbuilding”。在機場出發大廳，“前行30米”的標識直接翻譯成了“Goahead30m”，按慣用方法，ahead後面不會跟名詞，令外國乘客十分別扭，甚至有點搞笑，其實最簡單而直接的表述應該是“30mahead”。
“W.C”含義粗俗
該規範規定，廁所、洗手間和衛生間統壹譯為“Toilet”，涉及性別時，男廁譯為“Gents/Men”；女廁譯為“Ladies/Wom鄄en”。原本市民熟悉的公廁代名詞“W.C”將被徹底取締。
有關人士介紹，“W.C”詞義本身與“Toilet”區別不大，但是從修辭上說，前者給人的印象粗俗簡陋、不太衛生，後者文雅。“WC”是“Water-Closet”（沖水水箱）縮寫，現在很多西方國家根本不用“W.C”表示廁所，英語裏，“W.C”內涵可以理解為中國話所說的茅坑。
此外，該規範規定，飯店、餐館全部譯為“Restaurant”，而專門供人喝酒、小憩的酒館、酒店則譯為“Wineshop”。
