絕大多數的中譯文都簡簡單單地進行了丘吉爾名句的直譯,甚至辭不達意。對於這段話來說,(Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning),簡單把二戰看作“防守-反擊”過程的話,“the beginning of the end”中的end表示的是反擊階段,而“the end of the beginning”中的beginning指的是防守階段。當然實際上二戰並非如此簡單的兩段式的過程,然而更好理解丘吉爾這段話的含義,是應該對小過程進行抽象和凝練的。後來,此句外延被擴展了,廣泛地被用於到處,表達的意義也窮期所想。不過,中譯文中比較流行的壹種譯法“這不是結束,甚至不是結束的開始,而僅僅是開始的結束!”,還是很有壹點趣味的,盡管猛壹看到的時候會比較費解壹點並且譯文對原文的語氣進行了善意的曲解。
