其實並列比較級的句子判斷對錯非常簡單。記住第壹句是因，第二句是果。所以判斷對錯的時候，只要把句首的定冠詞去掉，換上if.......then，再把比較級的形容詞或副詞插回到句子裏正確的位置。如果有省略的謂語，再把謂語加回去。這句話如果選B，轉換後的句子就是：
If the standard of living is higher and the national wealth is greater, then greater amount of paper is used.
這是正確的。如果選D，那麽第二句多出來的第二個the就有麻煩了。轉換後的句子是：
If the standard of living is higher and the national wealth is greater, then the greater amount of paper is used.
這是錯的。比較級是不能有定冠詞的。
其實樓主的語感非常好。這道題如果美國人做，恐怕也會有壹多半的人答D。這是因為出題的人從來不講英語，搞出了個語法對但是語感錯的答案。英語裏當greater用在並列比較級句子時，基本上都是用the greater the amount of。這就是約定俗成，沒什麽道理。B雖然語法上是對的，但是沒人這麽說。真正地道的英文是：
The higher the standard of living and the greater the national wealth, the greater the amount of paper used.

正如我說的，B也是錯的。正確答案是the greater the amount of paper used。這道題被抄到中國，抄的人自作聰明，把錯答案當成了對答案，鬧出了個chinglish的笑話。
